"I was there with Time's Up presenting at the Golden Globes and I found myself, in the weeks leading up to that, in more discussions and more phonecalls with actresses, writers, directors -- females that I have, sadly, just kind of been pushed far away from in the industry," said Vikander.

"Because so often I've been the only woman in the room."

Vikander didn't attend the Oscars this year, but she said she'd caught up with McDormand's speech that morning.

"I think the wonderful thing is she's talked about the involvement of us women and what those last few months, especially, have meant in our industry," she said.

And the campaign has clearly impacted her on a personal level as well as a professional one.

"The wonderful feeling of having made more female friends in the last few months than I've probably made in my entire career, has meant the world," she said.
